This page contains all information on the Blantyre ABC (Amateur Boxing Club) relating to the training days/times, age ranges and contacts if someone wishes to join. Todays boxing club was established in 1970 and will celebrate it's 40th anniversary this year. There was a boxing club before that though which was established in the 1940's before being replaced with the club which is still going strong today.
The boxing club trains on a Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 5pm- 7.30pm. The boxers have to pay £5 a week which goes towards the monthly rent fee for the gym.
The club is run by Mr John McDermott. John has been training boxers for 40 years and has taken numerous boxers on to great things such as commonwealth victory. He himself was a Commonwealth gold medal winner in 1962 in Perth, Australia. That same year he was also the Scottish champion at the Featherweight class. John was awarded an MBE in 2004 for his services to the sport of boxing in Scotland in recognition of the numerous fighters he has trained to go on to great success. He guided Pat Clinton to a world title in 1992 and then more recently coached Commonwealth super-featherweight champion Craig Docherty.

He along with his assistant coaches/trainers continue to coach fighters to winning ways as you can see from last years list of winners at the foot of the page.
John was trained to fight by Charlie Hill who took him under his wing when he was 10 and was still coaching him during his Commonwealth and Scottish title wins. Charlie Hill was himself a winner during his fighting career winning both the British Title and the Lonsdale Belt.
